Jeepney Joyride

Fans say that Jeepney Joyride combines the comic and lively performance of Parokya ni Edgar, the hip and upbeat music of Put3ska, and the energy, vibe and spunk of Kamikazee in a fresh and totally unique way.

Jeepney Joyride, a staple in the present Philippine alternative music scene, was formed in 1999 and is based in Quezon City. They have just released their first full length album entitled “Let’s Get Party” under Sony-BMG which features a mix of Pop, Rock, Ska and Reggae served up with a contemporary Pinoy twist.

Composed of Norman Bernardo on vocals, Jerwine Dumalag on keyboard, Mark Bambico on drums, Jet Gozar on guitar, Gian Caluag on bass, Melvin Cabañero on trumpet, Chris Sison on tenor sax, and Diamond Manuel on trombone, the band started out doing covers from US based Ska bands. Eventually, the nagging desire to express their emotions and ideas compelled the members to play their original compositions.

Part of the band’s modest achievements include winning the Red Horse Muziklaban 1999; third-place finish in the 2000 Yamaha Band Alert; 2004 NU107 Rock Awards Best Album Cover nominee for their EP “God Knows Hudas not Pay”, and Best Video nomination for “Kape” from the same EP in 2003 NU107 Rock Awards.  The band is also part of a compilation album released in Japan by the Asian Ska Foundation in 2003.  They were also National finalist in the 2005 Global Battle of the bands (GBOB).  Jeepney Joyride has also had its share of TV appearances in ASAP and Masayang Tanghali Bayan (MTB) of ABS-CBN and Chowtime of IBC 13.  The band played for 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011 Fete de la Musique and 2005 edition of the highly regarded rock event, Pulp Summer Slam. They are also active members of RodckEd and Dakila supporting the various advocacies of both groups and has sent them playing in Cabanatuan for “Gawad Kalinga” and as far as Bicol for “Habitat for Humanity”.

Apart from the band’s seeming longevity, they also boast of an energetic live performance which includes unorthodox dance routines and maybe even body contortions that sends their audience laughing and begging for more. This may be the reason the band has been nominated for “Best Live Act” at the 2007 NU107 Rock Awards.

The music for their album Let’s Get Party was recorded at Sonic State Studio under the teamwork of Jonathan Ong (producer for 2007 Awit Awards Best Novelty song “Kring song” by Jose and Wally) and Robert Javier (producer for 2007 Awit Awards Best Selling Album of the Year “KaminAPO Muna”). They are also the same guys who produced Orange ‘N Lemons’ second and third albums.

The band’s repertoire includes renditions of songs from various artists (which are also some of the band’s influences): The Beatles, Tom Jones, George Michael, The Cure, The Dawn and even megastar Sharon Cuneta.  They sing about a wide array of Filipino emotions and experiences that people from all walks of life can relate to.  Their songs speak of love, friendship, and change. They are currently working on the video for their latest single, “We Don’t Want to be Famous”, a song that speaks about the experiences and hardships of being in a band.

Jeepney Joyride is as Filipino as the proud jeepney plying our crowded streets – colorful, crazy, loud and merry.  Watch them, see them, hear them and let this band take you for a JOYRIDE.

They will be performing at the Mystic Shore Beach Party on October 27, 2012 at Coco Beach Island Resort.
